Ontario's police chiefs are launching their annual summertime Drive Safe campaign, and this year's theme is "Share the Road."
Ottawa police officers on bicycles have been using a new sonar device to check if motorists are giving cyclists the legally-required one-meter leeway when passing.
Constable Michel Vandal said the best excuse he's heard was from a driver told him they couldn't go over the yellow line along the middle of the road.
"If there's no traffic coming in the opposite direction, you can go over the line, and leave at least a meter to two meters of space between your vehicle and the bicycle," Vandal said.
Ottawa police chief Charles Bordeleau said drivers and cyclists have to learn to get along on the roads.
"Too many people continue to die on our roads," Bordeleau told CFRA.
"We all have that shared responsibility together."
