The RCMP are watching an Ottawa man they believe is connected to terrorist activities.
In an exclusive article, VICE Canada reports RCMP are seeking a terror-related peace bond against 24-year-old Tevis Gonyou-McLean because they're worried he may take part in an act of terrorism either domestically or abroad.
Gonyou-McLean, whose mother told VICE is a recent convert to Islam who has lived with mental health issues, was arrested last month and charged with uttering a threat to cause death or harm to another person.
He was released from custody on a $1,000 bond and with strict conditions, including that he reside at the Salvation Army's Booth Centre on George Street.
Stephanie Carvin, a former national security analyst and Assistant Professor at Carleton University's Norman Patterson School of International Affairs tells CFRA's Bill Carroll it's clear Gonyou-McLean is troubled.
"This was obviously a very troubled person, but clearly on a number of fronts," said Stephanie Carvin, a former national security analyst and assistant professor at Carleton University's Norman Patterson School of International Affairs. "The fact that this man is now living in a homeless shelter is indicative of the fact - and he's not allowed to contact his mother - is indicative that there may be a broader set of circumstances here, other than his beliefs."
Gonyou-McLean has been banned from speaking with a number of other men facing and convicted of terror-related offences.
He's scheduled to return to court later this month.
