First came the extreme cold, which thickened up the ice, allowing the Rideau Canal Skateway to open on January 5.
Now, a January thaw is here, and the National Capital Commission is shutting the Skateway down - for now anyway.
The NCC says the Skateway will close at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday. Crews will work, weather permitting, to ensure it opens again as soon as possible.
You're being warned to stay off the ice. Snow, freezing rain, and warmer temperatures could make it unsafe.
A freezing rain warning was put into effect Wednsday afternoon and the forecast called for a high of 7°C with drizzle on Thursday.
Colder temperatures, in the -25°C to -15°C range, return this weekend.
