An 18-year-old Saudi woman who was detained in Thailand while trying to run away from her family is now in her new home of Canada.
Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland welcomed Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun at Toronto's Pearson Airport this morning, with the teenager wearing a grey "Canada'' hoodie and a blue United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees hat.
Freeland called Alqunun a "very brave new Canadian.''
Canada granted the woman asylum after she launched a social media campaign saying she was afraid she would be killed by her allegedly abusive family if she was deported back home.
