Time magazine will have four different covers for its 2018 Person of the Year edition.
“The Guardians and the War on Truth” is the theme. Time is choosing to honour journalists who have been faced threats to their freedom and their lives in the pursuit of their work.
The list includes murdered Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi; indicted Philippines-based news editor Maria Ressa; jailed Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, of Myanmar; and the staff of the Annapolis Capital Gazette, five of whom were murdered by a gunman earlier this year.
The official reveal was made on NBC’s Today Show Tuesday morning.
“We chose to highlight four individuals and one group who have taken great risks in pursuit of greater truths,” Time Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal told Today.
The runners-up include U.S. President Donald Trump at #2 and U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating alleged links between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russian interference in the U.S. election.
The Person of the Year edition will be on newsstands this Friday.
