A 21-year-old Algonquin College student has been identified as the victim of a fatal rollover near the College early Thursday morning.
"It is with sadness we inform you of the passing of student Alexander Asmis, who was enrolled in the Civil Engineering Technology program," the college said in a statement on its website.
Ottawa Fire says the car, carrying five people, flipped on its roof on Deerfield Drive around 3 a.m. It struck and damaged two other cars before doing so.
Upon arrival, firefighters found at least one person had to be extricated from the vehicle.Crews had to remove the driver's side door to get the patient out.
Asmis, of Dunrobin, was taken to hosptial in critical condition, suffering a head injury, according to Ottawa Paramedics. He later died in hospital.
There were two other men and two women in the car. They suffered minor injuries.
Asmis was also a midfielder for the Algonquin Thunder men's soccer team, and the son of an Ottawa firefighter.
Flags were lowered at Algonquin College on Thursday.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Police could only confirm the vehicle was traveling westbound on Deerfield before it crashed,
