It’s all about the Stanley Cup this weekend! Canada is 150 years old this year, and Lord Stanley’s trophy turns 125! An entire weekend of activities is planned to celebrate these two monumental birthdays.
Friday, March 17th is the Stanley Cup® 125th Anniversary Tribute Concert at the Canadian Tire Centre from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. This original concept show features musical performances by Metric, The Sheepdogs, Bobby Bazini and Kevin Bazinet. The concert includes tales of Stanley Cup® glory from hockey legends Mike Bossy, Dave Keon, Guy Lafleur, Frank Mahovlich, Bernie Parent and Bryan Trottier, six of the 100 Greatest NHL® Players in history, in addition to rare archival footage of some of hockey’s most historic moments. The Stanley Cup® will be the guest of honour at this memorable experience for all ages. Liam Maguire, NHL historian, author and radio personality, will host the event along with renowned hockey sports anchor Chantal Machabée. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.ca
Before the concert, a FREE event takes place. From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. everyone’s invited to take part in the Stanley Cup® Pre-Show Party, where they’ll have the opportunity to take their photo with the holy grail of hockey (from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.) and enjoy hockey themed activities, giveaways and more.
On Saturday, March 18, witness the Stanley Cup® Monument Ground-Breaking Ceremony from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. at the corner of Sparks Street and Elgin Street. Residents and visitors will witness the ground-breaking ceremony at the site of this future national landmark on Sparks Street, 125 years to the day that the Stanley Cup® was born. The monument will be completed in December.
After that, make your way to the Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne Park from noon to 6:00 p.m. for a chance to have your photo taken with the Stanley Cup.
You can get your photo taken with the Stanley Cup at the Aberdeen Pavilion on Sunday, as well, from noon to 7:00 p.m. but stick around afterward for a viewing party to watch the Ottawa Senators take on the Montreal Canadiens. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
OHL hockey is paying tribute to St. Patrick’s Day this weekend. The Ottawa 67s will be dyed green when they host the Oshawa General on March 18 at 2 p.m. at The Arena at TD Place donning green jerseys for the full game. http://ottawa67s.com/
