Even though we've had a fair amount of surface ice buildup thanks to freezing rain, the last thing you would want to do right now is walk on a lake, river or the Rideau Canal.
Ottawa Police have sent out a reminder about how thick ice over bodies of water needs to be before you can venture out.
You need at least 15 centimetres of solid, clear ice to walk or skate alone. It's 25 centimetres for snowmobiles.
With the current temperature near freezing, ice thickness isn't even close to safe.
If you're in doubt, stay off.
Ottawa Fire notes it's had to come to the aid of snowmobilers and pet owners so far this season.
