An woman in her 50s was taken to hospital after she was struck by a large falling tree branch outside her home near Main Street, according to Ottawa Paramedics.
The woman suffered a fractured arm, but is otherwise in stable condition.
The incident happened shortly after 9 a.m. Monday. Paramedics say the woman was trying to get to her car when the branch began to fall. They think she tried to shield herself with her arm, which resulted in the fracture, but may have prevented a more serious head injury.
Branches and hydro poles are down across the city as the freezing rain continues to accumulate. Paramedics say they have also responded to multiple calls reporting minor head injuries from people falling on icy sidewalks and driveways.
A freezing rain warning remains in effect for Ottawa-Gatineau. Hydro Ottawa reported 100 outages affecting about 22,000 customers as of 11:30 a.m..
They are urging the public to treat any downed power lines as live and dangerous. Residents who encounter downed lines are to stay at least 10 metres away and call 911 to report them immediately.
