River Ward Councillor Riley BrockingtonĀ thinks public safety is at risk because fire hydrants aren't being cleared of snow during the winter.
Brockington saidĀ he saw many hydrants in his area remain snow-covered all winter long.
That's despite city public works officials assuring him that crews clean away hydrants within a couple of weeks.
Brockington has suggested fire crews spend an hour or so a day clearing hydrants near high-risk locations like apartment blocks and seniors residences.
But they won't because they don't want to encroach on another union's work.
"They get out there for education campaigns, they get out there talking to people about barbecue safety, they get out talking about home smoke detector and carbon monoxide safety," Brockington said.
"Why can't they also get out there and help clear fire hydrants during non-emergencies?
Brockington wants city staff to see what the next step should be.
"Buried hydrants is a safety issue," he said.
He added the city can't expect citizens to be standing out on the road clearing fire hydrants each winter.
