A section of Rideau will be closed to vehicles all day until the end of December, starting Wednesday night.

Expanded street closures are coming to Rideau Street.

Starting at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, a section of Rideau Street between Sussex Drive and Dalhousie Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic until the end of December.

This is all for the construction of the LRT station across from the Rideau Centre.

Presently, the street is closed to vehicles overnight, but buses, taxis and delivery trucks are allowed on Rideau during the day.

The new closures would bar all vehicles from the street all day. The City says detours will be in place for taxis and delivery vehicles.

OC Transpo has been detouring all buses that service Rideau Street between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. to the Mackenzie King Bridge. Those routes will continue to service Mackenzie King.

The following changes to other OC Transpo routes that travel on Rideau Street will apply:

  • Routes 1 and 7 will operate via Daly Avenue and will stop at the intersection of Rideau Street and Dalhousie Street and Daly Avenue and Nicholas Street
  • Routes 2 and 4 will operate along Albert Street and Slater Street and will end at the corner of Elgin Street and Sparks Street
  • Route 9 will end at Dalhousie Street and Rideau Street and will start at Sussex Drive and Rideau Street
  • Routes 12 and 18 will stop at Rideau Street and Dalhousie Street and will end at Daly Avenue and Nicholas Street. The first stop for eastbound trips will be at Daly Avenue and Nicholas Street
  • Route 14 will operate via the Mackenzie King Bridge
  • With these changes, the sections of Routes 2 and 4 east of the canal will not operate and the sections of Routes 9 and 12 west of the canal will not operate

Further, STO buses that normally service Rideau Street will stop on Mackenzie Avenue, Sussex, and on Rideau at Dalhousie for the duration of the closure.

Pedestrians will still be able to access the street as normal and businesses will remain open.
