Gatineau Police say an officer shot and killed a dog Tuesday, during an investigation into reports of a door being left open at a home on rue Marcelle-Ferron.
Police say calls from neighbours came in at around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, saying the door of a home was left open and a dog was wandering alone in the street.
The officer arrived to check on the home and ensure no one was in danger and no crime had been committed. Upon arrival, he saw the dog, and withdrew to call animal control.
But, police say, before animal control could arrive, the dog charged at the officer, “demonstrating obvious signs of aggression,” according to a press release. That’s when the officer fired his gun.
Animal control arrived to take charge of the dog, whose death was confirmed by the SPCA.
The officer was not hurt.
The home was investigated and nothing out of order was found.
Gatineau Police say an administrative investigation is underway, which is normal any time an officer fires his or her gun while on duty.
Police have also spoken with the owner of the dog.
