The City's mayor is looking to the province for a new law to protect staff and patients at abortion clinics.
This comes amid reports of of harassment and threats outside the Morgentaler Clinic on Bank Street downtown where protesters can be often be spotted carrying graphic anti-abortion posters.
Jim Watson has written to Ottawa-Centre MPP and provincial attorney general, Yasir Naqvi, asking for a new Access to Abortion Services act to "to ensure that patients seeking, and staff providing, abortion services have the same protections, whether they are in Toronto, Ottawa, or anywhere else in Ontario."
"Reproductive rights are human rights," Watson said in a statement. "Anyone seeking or providing abortion services should have the right to do so without feeling harassed, threatened, ashamed or afraid for their safety. This legislation would help ensure that those individuals have the protection they need."
