We may see more prohibitions added to city noise bylaws, following a series of public meetings that begin Monday evening at the Greenboro community centre.
Noise issues were high on the list of things councillors wanted to review this term.
Councillor Diane Deans, chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee, said new additions may include low-frequency noise, like the bass from the neighbour's sound system, running snowblowers between 11 pm and 6 am, and limiting waste pickup hours.
But, more controversially, Deans said there may also be some changes that affect special events.
"A lot of those occur at both Lansdowne Park and the Canadian Tire Centre, so city staff are proposing changes that would give them a permanent exemption, based on a certain set of criteria," Deans said.
The councillor admitted that bylaw officers may have to be given more power to lay charges as they investigate noise complaints, and resources to speed up their responses, as they respond to events like loud parties.
"Parties are difficult, as you can appreciate, because they usually happen overnight," she said.
"Bylaw has limited ability to respond overnight, while police don't want to respond to those calls because they feel they have more urgent demands on their time, so it continues to be a challenge for us."
The committee will discuss the public's input, and the staff recommendations, on May 18th.
