The Ottawa Police Service is facing a budget shortfall of $4.4-million this year.
In a report on the first quarter of the year, the service says overtime, projected to be two million dollars over budget, is the biggest factor.
Other pressures include a 12 per cent jump in workplace insurance premiums, equipping officers with the drug antidote, Naloxone, and lower than expected revenue from collision reporting centres.
Police officials are freezing discretionary funding, reducing vehicle replacements, slowing implementation of a new communcations system, and delaying civilian hirings to try to balance the shortfall by year's end.
