Mayor Jim Watson has unveiled more details of Phase Two of light rail, and the cost has gone up from three billion, to $3.6-billion.
Phase Two would see the extension of light rail out to Trim Road in the east, to Baseline Station in the west, and into Riverside South, along with a link to the Ottawa Airport that will run from South Keys, past the EY Centre and to the terminal.
But it would now include an extension past Bayshore out to Moodie Drive in the west.
So far, the province has pledged $1.6-billion, although there's no formal agreement signed, and Watson is confident the federal government will come up with a similar contribution.
He wants work to begin immediately after the Confederation Line, costing $2.1-billion, is completed next year, so the city can take advantage of the expertise already here.
The extension of the Trillium Line, along with the airport link, is to be completed by 2021.
The extension to Trim Road would be ready by 2022, while the western expansion would be up and running in 2023.
About $300-million is being spent on infrastructure improvements that can be more easily done due to LRT construction.
When the project is completed, about 70 per cent of Ottawans would live within five kilometers of rail transit.
