Opponents of a Salvation Army shelter in Vanier are pushing forward with their plan to stop it.
An appeal has been filed with the Ontario Municipal Board on behalf of businesses against the proposed 350-bed facility on Montreal Road.
The appeal, being supported by SOS Vanier, says there are a number of flaws in the city's report because it doesn't follow provincial policies
Lawyer Michael Polowin says it also contradicts city policy that prevents a large shelter on a traditional main street and caps the number of shelters in this ward at four.
"You could only put one group home with ten residents. This is 35 times the size," says Polowin. "So how does that line up?"
Polowin says the appeal also addresses the social impact and the effect this will have on the francophone community.
"This is about rational analysis and rational argument. You can't make an evidence-based decision here because you're not looking at all the evidence," says Polowin.
In a statement, Salvation Army spokesperson says it is committed to this project but will remin open to dialogue with the community during this appeal.
The date for the OMB appeal hasn’t been set yet.
Polowin says at the very earliest, the hearing will be scheduled in the fall of 2018 but depending on scheduling, it could be held in 2019.
