Wearing pink toques and carrying homemade signs, about 3,500 people participated in the Ottawa edition of the women's march Saturday.
Women at the event say they wanted to make sure they were heard by lawmakers on this side of the border.
"Even though it was a democratic election, there are a lot of people that are very concerned about what it means for the next four years," said Catherine Butler. "and what it means for women's rights, what it means for the rights of minorities, what it means for lots of different groups."
The event in Ottawa was one of several happening in other cities in Canada, including Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, and Vancouver.
"It's all about getting rid of that sense of complacency," said one woman at the event. "We now have a cause for action and we need to get out there."
The group marched from the Human Rights Monument on Elgin Street to the Bronson Centre for a rally there.
About 600 protests took place globally, with the main event in Washington D.C.
