NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh will finally make his case to the voters to become a Member of Parliament, more than a year after becoming the party leader.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a federal by-election for the B.C. riding of Burnaby South Wednesday, the riding Singh has promised to challenge.
The seat was left empty in September after the departure of NDP MP Kennedy Stewart.
Two other by-elections were called Wednesday, for the Montreal-area riding of Outremont, which had been held by former NDP leader Tom Mulcair, and the Ontario riding of York-Simcoe, north of Toronto, which was held by longtime Conservative MP Peter Van Loan.
In all three cases, voters will head to the polls February 25.
Trudeau must still call a by-election in the B.C. riding of Nanaimo-Ladysmith, to fill the recent departure of NDP MP Sheila Malcolmson, who left to compete in a provincial by-election in B.C.
The February 25 vote will also be the first test of former Conservative MP Maxime Bernier's newly-minted People's Party of Canada. The PPC announced earlier this week that Laura-Lynn Tyler Thompson will represent the new party on the byelection ballot.
