Environment Canada is more certain about the path of an upcoming winter storm and has issued a winter storm watch for much of eastern Ontario.
The current forecast calls for light precipitation Saturday afternoon, becoming heavy in the evening.
"Current indications are that areas west of Ottawa will see precipitation mainly in the form of snow and that areas to the east will see mainly freezing rain," the weather watch says. Areas to the west of Ottawa could see between 15 and 30 cm of snow. To the east, the freezing rain will become rain before changing to snow on Sunday.
The Capital looks like it will be right in the middle. "Near Ottawa, significant freezing rain is expected Saturday evening," the statement says. "The freezing rain will change through ice pellets to snow Saturday night. The timing of the changeover is uncertain and this will affect the snowfall amounts."
Most of eastern Ontario is affected by this weather statement, but areas along the St. Lawrence are so far exempt.
Ottawa Police are reminding drivers to take it slow on snow-covered or frozen roads, and leave space between vehicles.
"If you're able to put winter tires on your vehicle, that would be amazing," says Ottawa Police Cst. Chuck Benoit, "And clear your windows and lights so that you're seen."
You can be ticketed for driving without clearing the snow off your car. Fines start at $110.
